Most garden plants are selected and grown for their fragrant and beautiful plants. There are also some plant species that are grown for their impressive and unique-looking leaves. A garden with a combination of plants that bear colorful and attractive flowers and plants with lovely and stunningly captivating leaves will surely looks spectacular.
Here are some garden plant species with uniquely beautiful leaves.
Breynia disticha
The Breynia disticha is a garden plant grown for its unique leaves. It belongs to the genus Breynia which is consists of 35 species. The plant on the above photo was taken in Maui, Kahului. This plant species can be found from India to Australia.
Rattle Snake Plant (Calathea lancifolia)
Rattle Snake Plant or Calathea lancifolia is a species of flowering plant that belongs to the family Marantaceae. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant for its beautifully-patterned leaves.
Elephant’s Ear (Caladium)
There are hundreds of different cultivars of Caladium or Elephant’s Ear. Although these plants are widely grown as ornamental plants, they are primarily grown not for their flowers but for its impressively colorful and beautiful heart-shaped leaves that com in different colors and patterns. These toxic plants are also known commonly as Heart of Jesus and Angel Wings.
Sweetheart Plant (Caladium bicolor)
Caladium bicolor is a perfect example of an Elephant’s ear or Caladium. The leaves are brightly-colored and beautifully patterned. Caladium bicolor is commonly known as Sweetheart Plant.
Peacock Plant (Calathea makoyana)
Like the bird species called Peacock or Peafowl, the Peacock Plant or Calathea makoyana is also impressively captivating for its beautifully-designed leaves. This plant is from Brazil and is now grown anywhere else in the world.
Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba)
Ginkgo, which is also known as the Maidenhair Tree, is a unique species of tree with no close living relative. Although many tree species change color as the season change, the Ginkgo or Gingko is exceptionally different and beautiful. During winter time, its leaves turn into bright golden yellow making them impressively beautiful and attractive. This tree can be grown as ornamental tree and has different uses as a traditional medicine and as food.
Some of the most impressive specimens of Ginkgo can be found in Japan such as the ginkgo tree located in Toyama which is said to be 1,400 years old
