Colorful Underwater Creatures Called Nudibranchs: The Spotted Ones

Nudibranch is from Latin word nudus which means nude or naked and brankhia which means gills.

Nudibranchs are amongst the most colorful sea creatures. There are 3,000 known species of nudribranchs. These animals are also called ‘sea slugs’. Nudibranch is from Latin word nudus which means nude or naked and brankhia which means gills.

Here are some of the most noticeable and very attractive nudibranchs due to their unique spots.

1.) Tambja sagamiana

The colorful Tambja sagamiana that can grow up to 110 mm is a sea slug species that inhabits the waters of Western Pacific Ocean within Taiwan, Japan and Korea. This species is noticeable for its blue color with yellow to orange pustule-like spots outlines in black all over its body. Its rhinophores is black while its gills are green and its foot is yellow.

The brightly colored Chromodoris luteorosea is a spotted sea slug species that belongs to the Chromodorididae family. It is noticeably attractive for its purple mantle with yellow markings all over its body.

The lovely-looking Chromodoris geminus is a very colorful sea slug species that belongs to the family Chromodorididae. It is exceptionally pretty for its beautiful red and black spots and yellow linings.

The cool-looking Nembrotha cristata is a colorful sea slug species that belongs to the Polyceridae family. This nudibranch with black mantle marked with numerous green markings all over its body occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific.

The colorful Ceratosoma amoenum looks delicious and lovely. These could be the reasons why it was commonly named the Clown Nudibranch. This beautiful sea slug species can be found in Australia and New Zealand.

This nudibranch looks so adorable. Chromodoris kuniei, a brightly colored sea slug species, belongs to the family Chromodorididae. It can be found in waters between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and dives to between 20 and 40 meters.

The very attractive Mexichromis multituberculata is a colorful sea slug species that inhabits Indonesia, Egypt, Hong Kong and many other Asian countries has purple spots around the edge of the mantle. Likewise, the mantle has scattered purple-tipped tubercles.

This nudibranch is simply gorgeous. Its binomial is Hypselodoris infucata. This is a very colorful sea slug species that lives in the tropical Indo-West Pacific and in the Mediterranean.

This uniquely colored and spotted species of sea slug that can be found in Australia is scientifically called Hypselodoris obscura. This beautiful nudibranch belongs to Chromodorididae family.

17.) Sea Clown Triopha (Triopha catalinae)

The Sea Clown Triopha is a colorful sea slug species that can be found the Eastern Pacific from Alaska to Mexico. They can also be found in South Korea and Japan. It belongs to the family Polyceridae and its name is derived from Santa Catalina Island in California, USA.

18.) Orange-Clubbed Nudibranch (Limacia clavigera)

The Orange-clubbed Nudibranch simply looks elegant with its beautiful coloration of white, yellow and orange. It can be found along the Atlantic coast of Europe, including the British Isles, and from Norway to the Mediterranean. This sea slug species that can grow up to 20 mm is also found along the South African coast from Saldanha Bay to Port Alfred.

19.) Ceratosoma brevicaudatum

Does it look like a food to you? This spotted and colorful nudibranch species called Ceratosoma brevicaudatum looks like yummy. This uniquely colored sea slug belongs to the family Chromodorididae.

20.) Sea Lemon (Doris odhneri)

Is this an albino species of nudibranch? Of course not, it is called Doris odhneri, a sea slug species with natural white coloration. Although it may looks like it is spotted, it is not quite noticeable because its spots are also white. It can be found from Kenai Peninsula, Alaska to Point Loma, California. This 20 cm long nudibranch is also known as Ohner’s Dorid, Giant White Nudibranch, White Knight Nudibranch and Giant White Dorid.
