Poultry Farming is the commercial raising of domestic birds like chickens, turkeys, and ducks etc for their meat and eggs. In recent times, poultry eggs and meat has been confirmed as one of the most suitable source of protein for human consumption. Poultry products have become a dietary substitute for beef and pork because of its low dietary fat. Going by the high demand for poultry products in recent times, there is the need to further increase the investments into the industry while at same time, it is important for individuals to make their own poultry farms, at least for subsistence purposes.

In the early times, chicken were kept in small flocks for the production of eggs and meat in the home for subsistence purposes. The poultry business became commercialized in the 20th Century when the industry’s main target was to meet up with egg productions for the market. Then they proceeded to the production of broilers, male chicken usually raised for consumption over the years. In the 1930s and 1940s, the poultry industry became one of the major producers of protein for human consumption. During and after the World War II, poultry products became very prominent in the market because of the shortage of beef and pork; the later requires a longer time to develop while poultry products require about six to seven weeks to produce a broiler and about five months to produce a layer (a laying hen).

Today, modern technology has improved the productivity of chickens as compared to the early years. The capacity of egg producing hens or layers has tripled over the years; the same number of hens that could produce a thousand eggs in a day can produce three thousand today by the help of improved feeds (layers mash / feed).

The more spectacular improvements are found in the production of broilers which started on a commercial scale in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia where almost all the broilers originated from the white Plymouth Rock females and white Cornish males. The poultry industry has been equipped with so many equipments to help improve poultry business. Most poultry farms in recent times are automated to provide a constant supply of feed, water and maintain the necessary temperature; antibiotics and drugs are dispensed to maintain good health for the birds.

Chickens are mostly kept in cages; five to ten per cage depending on the size of the cage. There is also the litter floor pattern of keeping chickens, but is not the most effective way because it gives rise to ammonia rich air that can cause respiratory and other diseases that attacks chickens. On the other hand, the cage provides greater comfort for the chickens and allows flow of air freely. The light levels and the reduced contact between birds also help to check the birds against cannibalism. As a result of modern technological development, many poultry houses now provide excellent environmental control, and the management and marketing of the birds are finely regulate.
