Intricate and Unique Testicle Orchids

Testicle Orchids are terrestrial orchids that have tubers instead of pseudobulbs. They produce an erect stem. The inflorescence is a cylindrical to globular spike.

Orchids presented on this article belong to the genus Orchis. This genus gets its name from the Greek orchis which means "testicle’ due to the appearance of the paired subterranean tuberoids. Testicle Orchids occurs mainly in Europe and Africa. They can also be found in Tibet, Mongolia, China and Japan.

Testicle Orchids are terrestrial orchids that have tubers instead of pseudobulbs. They produce an erect stem. The inflorescence is a cylindrical to globular spike.

1.) Monkey Orchid (Orchis simian)

Among members of the genus Orchis, the Monkey Orchid is the most peculiar. This orchid species starts flowering at the top and slowly progressing downwards. This adorable orchid is also known for its pungent odor, which some say is similar to that of feces.

2.) Galilee Orchid (Orchis Galilaea)

Orchis galilaea is a unique orchid species that occurs from southern Turkey to Israel. The above photo of Orchis Galilaea is photographed in Mount Carmel, Israel. Like all other Orchis species, it starts flowering at the base and then slowly progressing upwards.

3.) Military Orchids (Orchis militaris)

The Military Orchid is a pretty and unique orchid species endemic to Europe. With robust stem, Military Orchid grows up to 50 cm tall. The inflorescence forms a purplish dense cone consisting of up to 40 flowers. The sepals and the side petals in each flower are gathered together and form a pointed "helmet", hence its common name. Furthermore, this Testicle Orchid is unique in color, purple in the inside and lilac in the outside.

4.) Italic Orchid (Orchis italica)

Orchis italica is a peculiar-looking orchid species of the Mediterranean region. The abopve photo of a beautiful flower of Orchis italic was taken in the Natural Park of Serra de Enciña de Lastra in Galicia, Spain. Like all Orchis species except the Monkey Orchid, it starts flowering at the base and then slowly progressing upwards.

5.) Man Orchid (Orchis anthropophora)

The Man Orchid is a beautiful and unique orchid species of Europe. It was so-named because its flower resembles a human figure. The suspended torso and limbs is formed by the lobes of the labellum and the head is formed by the petals and sepals.

This Testicle Orchid grows up to 40 cm in height and bear flowers between April and June.

6.) Lady Orchid (Orchis purpurea)

The pretty Lady Orchid is an orchid species that can be found in Europe and Africa. They can be found in Turkey and the Caucasus and favors woodlands but occasionally occur on savanna. This unique orchid’s flower spike can reach up to 100 cm in height and is densely covered with up to 50 flowers.

7.) Orchis spitzelii

Orchis spitzelii is a unique-looking orchid species of temperate regions. It can be found from Sweden, eastern Spain to the Caucasus. This Testicle Orchid can also be found in Africa. The Orchis spitzelii flower shown above was photographed in France.

8.) Three-toothed Orchid (Orchis tridentate)

Three-toothed Orchid is a beautiful and attractive orchid species that can be found in Europe. It occurs from Spain to Turkey and Lebanon. It can also be found in Poland and Germany. The Three-toothed Orchid prefers woodland, grassy areas and shrub.

9.) Orchis brancifortii

This lovely-looking orchid is the Orchis brancifortii, a species of orchid native to Italy. This Testicle Orchid occurs in Sardinia, Sicily and southern part of the country.

10.) Provence Orchis (Orchis provincialis)

The beautiful Provence Orchis is an orchid species that can be found in northwestern Africa. It can also be found from south-central and southern Europe to the Caucasus.

***Pterostylis coccinea

Although this is not a member of the genus Orchis, I included it on the list for its unusual appearance. This unique orchid is scientifically known as Pterostylis coccinea. It is a species of orchid native to the ‘Land Down Under’ – Australia. It can be found from New South Wales to Victoria.
