In the simplest sense, electrolytes are described as molecules which are positively and negatively charged. They are also called ions which are found in cells and body fluids such as bloodstream and plasma. Common electrolytes that are characterized with a positive charge are sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, while the negative ones are bicarbonates, phosphates, and chlorides. Electrolyte tests are important for the body’s health, because they are used to determine the balance of body fluid and if an individual is in any danger of kidney, liver and heart diseases. Both the positive and negative charges have to at a certain equilibrium which makes the normal electrolyte values in the human body.

Routine blood tests are also used as basis for electrolyte tests. It can be found that an individual has normal electrolyte values in the human body or skewed ones. In the latter, the results suggest an imminent or prevailing health situation that the patient needs to be wary of. Reasons that can lead to abnormal electrolyte values in the human body include deficiency in the patient’s diet, excessive urination, and diarrhea that can lead to loss of nutrients, and vomiting.

Once a physician carries out the electrolyte test and finds out abnormal electrolyte values, the patient might be put on an emergency treatment depending on the case. This is to restore the body to the normal electrolyte values. In most cases, where an emergency is not the case, the physician will have to diagnose the patient thoroughly to find out the underlying disease that causes the imbalance. Common problems are known to be liver related; therefore, kidney infections have to be treated in the process of rectification.

Electrolyte concentrations are supposed to be the same despite the body liquid that is examined. Whether plasma or serum is examined, the normal electrolyte values in the human body should be obtained. These values are expressed in different units, including units of weight per unit of volume, say mg/dL, or in terms of molecules in a specified volume, which is also called molarity. The normal values of potassium are lower than those of sodium. For calcium, the normal electrolyte value should range between 8.8 and 10.4 mg/dL.

The normal concentration of sodium in serum should be between 136-145 mM while the level of potassium should be 3.5 to 5.0 mM. Sodium occurs as a higher concentrate in the body compared to the other ions. Most of the calcium in the body occurs as an ion that is bound to the body proteins, with a concentration ranging between 8.8 and 10.0mg/dL. Magnesium on the other hand ranges between 2.0-3.0mg/dL, occurring as the least concentrate of the ions on the electrolyte test. All this form are the normal electrolyte values in the human body.

Any values for any of these ions found to be askew of the normal ranges are considered abnormal electrolyte values in the human body and the individual is eligible for a medical diagnosis that can reveal an underlying disease.
